Japan Pushes for Swift U.S. Auto Tariff Reduction as Trade Negotiator Returns to Washington
Japan’s chief trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa is leading a delegation back to Washington today, August 5, to press for urgent action on reducing U.S. auto tariffs from 27.5% to 15%. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi emphasized the need for President TRUMP to expedite the executive order, which would lower uncertainty for Japanese exporters.
Economic Revitalization Minister Akazawa stated his team will prioritize securing the tariff agreement, mirroring recent U.S.-UK auto trade terms. Japan exported over 4,300 products to the U.S. last week, with Prime Minister Ishiba noting contingency plans to mitigate high tariff impacts. While Japan initially sought full removal, it now seeks to avoid compounded tariffs on its goods.
